Leavers assembly at SMaB (Outdoor)
In the closing week, SMaB was still able to host an adjusted leavers assembly- paying homage to the individual children of Year 6. On this occasion, the playground was transformed into our collective worship space to accommodate both parents and students in a Covid-affected year! Reverend Jones-Perry of St Cuthbert’s delivered an engaging sermon on change; notably, what you take with you and aspects of your life that you inevitably leave behind. However, God is by your side through these challenging times and the accompanying prayer illuminated how your faith can endure. Each child was invited to the stage to hear their bespoke goodbye message from their class teacher and to receive their yearbook from Mrs Butcher. As always, it was a delightful occasion and celebrated the individuality of the character of each classroom and the characters within each classroom.
Leavers service at SMaB church
At the end of the academic year, the Year 6 pupils at SMaB were warmly welcomed by Father Engin and members of St Michael at Bowes C of E congregation. The visit was, in part, to mark the culmination of their journey at SMaB and the values and experiences they will take with them, but also a look ahead to new ventures, challenges and opportunities presented by their big ‘change’. Father Engin led the ceremony with a sermon on new opportunities and embracing change. Representatives from each class read a prayer in dedication to their experiences at SMaB and to ask the Lord for guidance and strength. The service closed with a prayer asking for courage, protection and success through their transition.
BBC Radio 4 Interview
On Thursday, a journalist from BBC Radio 4’s Patches programme visited our community garden! Three children who have been involved in preparing, planting and harvesting produce were interviewed. Milan took home our first ripe courgettes and used them to prepare a meal with his family. He informed me that they tasted amazing!

Thanking Our Local Neighbours
During the last year, we have needed to make adjustments to how and when children enter and exit the school grounds. This has meant quite a bit of disruption to our neighbours in the local community; particularly those living on Tottenhall Road and in Grenoble Gardens. On Wednesday and Thursday, Mrs Gavriel took a group of pupils to deliver a little thank you card and gift of a sunflower plant to our neighbours on Tottenhall Road and Grenoble Gardens. Our children enjoyed chatting to the local residents!
Christian Aid Week
The children came to school dressed in blue showing their support for Christian Aid week.
Thank you to everyone for their kind donations, an amazing £560.23 was raised.
Community Garden
The garden we now share with St Cuthbert’s and a local GP surgery is beginning to take shape!
All classes have planted seeds in troughs in the classroom and once we have plants, some will be transferred to the garden. Our space has been allocated, we have planned out our plot and begun to purchase what we need for each year group to have an area to cultivate.
We have had offers of support from two parents so far – thank you, we will be in touch soon. Pupils from each year group will be able to visit the site and help to dig, plant and look after our edible garden.
We would still appreciate any offers of support to tend our spot, build raised beds for some plants and wall boxes to grow herbs.
Firm Foundations
Father Engin leading collective worship about building our lives on firm foundations. ‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.’ Matthew 7:24-27

Ash Wednesday
Ash Wednesday is important to Christians because it marks the start of the Lenten period leading up to Easter, when Christians believe Jesus was resurrected. During this period, Christians show repentance and mourning for their sins, because they believe that Christ died for them.

Christmas
SMAB Christmas Week
We started off with Christmas Jumper Day. Thank you to everyone who supported the Christmas Jumper Day. The school managed to raise £256.18 for ‘Save The Children’ AND the Christmas raffle raised £443.00 for FOTSA.
During the same day Enfield Music service organised a live body percussion session with a festive twist. Over 180 classes across the borough logged on to the Zoom session.
That wasn’t all the children took part in; they ran the National Santa Dash in their Christmas Jumpers. As you can see from the pictures, they really enjoyed themselves.
12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS
The whole school performed the 12 days of Christmas in the playground. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t kind to us but nevertheless it was so lovely to be able to be together and sing again.
SMAB Christmas Day
Christmas Day 2020 at SMAB was another roaring success, even if the children had to stay in their bubbles; thank you to all the staff and pupils for making the day special. Most children braved the cold weather wearing their pyjamas ready for the festivities!
We visited “church” for our virtual traditional Christmas service organised by Reverend Jones-Parry and Fr Engin; children ate Christmas dinner in their classrooms wearing their party clothes. In the afternoon, in the safety of their own classroom bubbles the children watched classic Christmas films, played party games and took part in creative activities.
Year 4 Virtual Nativity
Well done to Year 4; under very difficult circumstances they managed to put on a lovely virtual performance of “The Nativity Story.” During rehearsals each class had to perform in their own bubbles and one class had to self-isolate for 2 weeks. It was very different not been able to share the live performance with parents/carers, relatives and friends. Nevertheless, a big thank you to all the children and staff for their hard work in putting the production together.
YEAR 3 CHRISTINGLES
Year 3 made Christingles to mark the beginning of advent. They are a symbolic object for many Christians at this special time of year. “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favours!” – Luke 2:14

Year 4 EXTERNAL PEACE POEM
Iris, in 4I wrote a beautiful poem, in an RE lesson. The task was to write a poem about internal or external peace. Her class teacher was so proud. Well done.
EXTERNAL PEACE
External peace, external peace,
Oh how I love you, external peace,
I feel peace when dancing,
I feel peace when prancing,
I feel peace spinning,
I feel peace when winning,
When I feel peace,I hug,
When I feel peace, I’m not a thug,
When I feel peace,I love,
When I feel peace, I fly like a dove.
Down through the Roof
Collective worship by Father Engin, Rebekah and Lucy.
This is a story from the Bible, that Christians believe in. It is a story about a man who wants help from Jesus, and his friends who helped him. Based on Luke 5: 17-39
Remembrance
Remembrance Day Service
Our Remembrance Day service was a bit different this year, however we still marked the day with a virtual service from Father Engin and Rebekah from St Michael at Bowes Church.
Year 6
In RE we have been studying the importance of remembrance. For the main task, children were asked to produce either a poem or a word collage based on the poppy a symbol of hope, peace and sacrifice. The children were incredibly reflective and respectful throughout the lesson. Elia’s poem, in particular, really moved us at the end’.
Home Learning
Godly Play
3M had a visit from Mine Engin, who came to share the story of Moses and the 10 Commandments. They listened to the story and there was plenty of time for discussion and an opportunity to ask questions. After the story the children created some creative pieces of artwork based around it.

Harvest
It is a time when we think of those who do not have food or warmth The SMAB community comes together every year and gives generously for those in need. This year all donations were passed on to St. Cuthbert’s Church where Revd Jones-Parry took them along to the local Food Bank. “Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness”. 2 Corinthians 9:10
